This five-story shopping mall in Addis Ababa examines the relationship between ongoing urbanization of site and resistance from local businesses. The design questions the “either/or” answer, seeking flexibility in infrastructural architecture that can both satisfying government’s regulation and vendors’ concerns. Let architecture be an ordering device, sorting complexities of the site into a loose organization, manifested through building structure.
